Etching LES GLANEUSES (The Gleaners) by Jean-Francois Millet (1814 - 1875)

Description

This is a rare early etching of "Les Glaneuses" better known as "The Gleaners" by Jean-Francois Millet (1814 - 1875). The Etching is printed in black on cream laid paper, Circa 1855-56. Measures 191 x 254 mm (7 1/2 x 10")plus margins around the etching. Second state (of 2) According to Delteil, the catalogue raisonné of Millet's prints,(Delteil 12ii) with the address of the publisher at bottom (...rue St. Jacques...).. Kennedy Galleries Stock number c38541 and a gallery label from William Macbeth Gallery NYC. A very good, well-inked impression of this important etching with strong contrasts.

The etching of "Les Glaneuses" came before the painting "The Gleaners" of the same subject, which is now in the The Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and was painted in 1857. It is represented in some of the most important museums in the world including :
