Paul Dubois was born in 1829 in the north of France. He studied law, then attended the school of fine arts at the cole de Beaux Arts in Paris and worked at the studio of Francois-Christophe-Armand Toussaint (1806 - 1862). After his studies he traveled to Rome where he was inspired by the imposing sculptures of the Renaissance masters. Dubois quickly became one of the most important sculptors of his time from 1865 and received many commissions for portraits and monuments. His equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, first presented in 1889, caused a sensation.
