Rupert Shephard was an English painter and printmaker born to a Quaker mother and an engineer father. He studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Art and became a schoolmaster at Raynes Park County School. Shephard exhibited with the London Group and the Euston Road School. His work during the 1940s was influenced by his contemporaries and had a painterly, rhythmic, and tonal character.
