Henry Gasser was born in Newark, New Jersey, and began his extensive education in art at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, where he held the post of director between 1946 and 1954. After attending the Newark School, he went on to New York's Grand Central Academy, before becoming a pupil of Robert Brackman's at the Art Students League. He completed his artistic education as a private student of John Grabach. Gasser has had an exceptionally successful career and exhibiting in the United States and abroad. He received many prizes, awards, and medals from distinguished art societies and has works in more than twenty-eight museum collections, among them the Philadelphia, Boston, and Newark Museums.

As a member of the National Academy of Design and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (1957), Gasser was also a member of many other important art organizations such as the Audubon Artists and the New Jersey Water Color Club. In 1954 Gasser resigned his directorship
